You're thinking of a device like a Linksys (Cisco) SPA3102?  Cisco calls
it a VoIP adapter or gateway.

On the asterisk front, there's FreePBX which is asterisk plus a nice web
front end. Also FreeSwitch just might be a good replacement for Asterisk
if you find Asterisk a bit clunky.
