We've done a lot of this exact (accelerometer and/or gyroscope) work
with BLE [1]. It works fantastically. I don't know if you have mobile
in your future, but iPhone 4S and above supports BLE (with some lame
but workable restrictions) and the next latest version of Android, 4.3
has built-in support BLE (good bye vendor-spicific stacks).
