I use an atheros minipci card in my laptop sometimes for creating an 
access point. There are pci cards out there based on atheros chips but 
it's sometimes hard to figure out what's under the hood.

I think some prism based cards may work too.

fwiw, The intel driver for linux can't do master mode so it can't be an AP.
