Religion and Science are methods of seeking answers to different questions.
One cannot correctly substitute for the other.

Put another way,
Science asks HOW.
Religion asks WHY.

Science by definition cannot answer WHY, since the underlaying
assumption of all science is that there really is no why, there is
only how.
Conversely religion is incapable of answering how, religion concerns
itself only with the why of a thing.

A meteor impacts the earth and destroys a significant portion of life on earth.
Science might say it's an asteroid that was perturbed by Jupiter's
gravity and ended up being slingshotted towards the earth.
Religion would say that $Deity caused/allowed it to happen to reduce
the population, punish the evil doers or create a new society from the
ashes.

Neither would claim the other's answer even though they describe the
same event and are both potential answers.
