openvpn and routing

I tried installing openvpn and following this tutorial:
http://wiki.debian.org/OpenVPN
I got as far as the statement "You should probably configure your route
at this step." I have tried several "route add" commands but none seem
to produce useful results. I can ping the local side of the connection,
but not the remote side.
My client looks like:
root at yendi:/etc/openvpn# route -n
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
10.9.8.1 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 UH 0 0 0 tun0
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 2 0 0 wlan0
192.168.124.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 virbr0
169.254.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.0.0 U 1000 0 0 wlan0

How do I add the appropriate route to each machine? Thanks
