Understanding mDNS, dns-sd, etc

I'm trying to understand the basics of mDNS and dns-sd.

So far the very best documentation I've found is BitTorrent BEP 26 (
http://bittorrent.org/beps/bep_0026.html), but I'd like to have someone who
has worked with the technologies before to help me understand some
scenarios and use cases and code examples.
