I don't think it's a "lemon" issue because the Kindle seems to work fine
at work (although I didn't spend as much time with it there as I have at
home). I called Amazon customer support again, and they had me run a
diagnostic command (";dm" in the Home screen search bar) that produced
Linux log files that I could attach to email and send in. I'm waiting to
hear what they have to say, but I'm guessing the following log entries
indicate a problem:

121106:222318 wpa_supplicant[1578]: ssid_from_txt: decoding [MyAccessPointSSID]
121106:222319 wpa_supplicant[1578]: Scan results did not fit - trying larger buffer (16384 bytes)
121106:222319 wpa_supplicant[1578]: Scan results did not fit - trying larger buffer (32768 bytes)
121106:222319 wpa_supplicant[1578]: Scan results did not fit - trying larger buffer (65535 bytes)
121106:222319 wpa_supplicant[1578]: Failed to get scan results

If they can't come up with a fix, I'll return the device and might opt
for a 3G "whispernet" model.
