You are describing FreeNX.  Disconnecting though doesn't quite act the
same as screen.  Rather it suspends all X-using processes.  But other
than that, this is exactly how FreeNX works.  You can pull across whole
desktops or just individual apps.  And it's way fast compared to X over
ssh or VNC.
