Whenever I add a disk to an array, I find the device uuid (e.g.,
sudo mdadm -E /dev/sdb1 |grep "Device UUID") and put it onto the disk
tray with a label maker. I haven't found any low information that's
reliable enough to trust, and the mdadm device uuid is a nice high-level
identifier.
