How long will your scripts live. Are these things that will be write once run once, or are these going to live for years.

If it is years python has a more structured syntax and is more providable for clean code.

Perl is beautiful and produces quickly written powerful code but without proper precautions can create messy code longterm.

At the end of the day it is a preference and the code quality will be dependent upon your skill. I suggest looking up a few tutorials in both and attempting a few simple problems. Once you have played with both you can see for yourself which to focus on.
