Back to the topic at hand...

One cool thing you could do with a microcontroller with a bunch of I/O
pins is hook up a rain gauge.  You could also hook up soil moisture
sensors, solar sensors, etc. so that you could automatically provide
the right amount of water at the right time depending on weather and
soil conditions.  Sparkfun has this cool weather station with a rain
gauge (http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=8942)
but you could probably find a rain gauge by itself.  In fact, here's a
