Google Groups for Non Google Members/Emails?

Chief complaints about google groups:

  1. It's hard to join a list if you are not a registered Google user
  2. It's hard to use your non-google email address

For number 1 I have no idea how to enroll a non-Google member.  For 
number 2, I added some of my other email addresses to my profile.  When 
I go to 'Edit my membership' and try to change 'Which address do you 
want to use for this group' to the one I use for PLUG and save, it 
doesn't hold that value - it goes right back to my gmail address.

How have some of you have addressed these things?  Has anyone been able 
to join a Google group without a Google membership, or to use your 
non-gmail address?
