VPS on the cheap

As far as I'm concerned, simple blogging capabilities would be
sufficient at this point.  Perhaps a Wiki.  However, I'm not the only
one in on this venture, and my buddy would like to be able to install
software willy-nilly, as it were.

A lot of the recommendations in this thread don't appear to be VPS's.
That's totally groovy.  I was just wondering if someone on the list
could tell me that $8/mo. for a genuine VPS was too good to be true.
