There is a difference. Nobody cares about the sendmail config files, in
fact everyone despises them. But all those sendmail replacements do all
the necessary things to drop in where sendmail was (with their own
config files), like /etc/aliases, the wacky sendmail binary with it's
myriad bizarre switches, etc. They emulate sendmail in the ways that
matter. Postfix (can) uses its own little db format that makes things
faster, but retains compatibility with the /etc/aliases format (perhaps
you need to run postmap on it, by way of the newaliases command, but
iirc sendmail had a similar setup). If it
didn't we'd rightfully call it lunacy.
