Is 2 better than 1?

I am looking at purchasing 1 GB of RAM for my linux server, and I
noticed that 512MB of RAM is EXACTLY half the cost of a full 1GB stick
[1].  Would I have better speed/performance with a 1GB stick or 2 x
512MB sticks?
