Flash -vs- Applets

Gmail is an example of AJAX done right. One of the best uses of it I've seen.

As for your question. Well, I suppose that would be alright. It would have
to provide a significant usage advantage over a non-applet solution
though, or I'd rather not use it anyway. But I'm set in my ways like that.
