What I do is send my outgoing mail though my ISPs mail server. I get
the idea this is what you're supposed to do. In my case it was as
simple as
/etc/postfix/main.cf:
relayhost = iprovo.net
What this does is an MX lookup on iprovo.net and then relays my mail
through the server that this lookup returns. When I was on Xmission
it was "relayhost = xmission.com".
Most (all?) ISPs relay outgoing mail for their customers without any
authentication. If AOL won't accept email from your ISP that's your
ISPs problem.
