Is there a way to have ping indicate when a packet has been dropped?

On the windows version of ping you see a "Request timed out.".  With the
Linux version the only indication is when you stop the ping and get the
final statistics.  I would like to have some visual way to know at what
moment packets are being dropped.  I looked through the man page and I
didn't see any options to give me the desired effect.

Is there maybe a different visual ping tool I could use?  I remember
seeing one that printed dots for every returned packet, and dashes for
dropped packets, but I can no longer remember the name of that tool.
