Absolutely. You can index a PNG image, just like GIF, and the image
file will almost always be smaller than the corresponding GIF. Since
you also get transparency (1-channel or full alpha), a PNG can do
everything a GIF can do except animation. In other words, there's
almost no reason to use GIF.
