Random shutdowns

If it were something drastic, wouldn't it just do an immediate poweroff? 
  The messages in the message log seem to indicate that it is actually 
performing a shutdown.  That is why this has me confused.

Is the owner of the poweroff request logged somewhere other then the 
syslogs (as I am not finding it in the syslogs)?
