Trying to get Gnome to run on Debian (Sarge) netinstall.

I installed the Debian (Sarge) netinstall, which has worked wonderfully.
I now would like to get Gnome installed. I did an "apt-get install
gnome" which said it needed a xserver so I installed xserver-xfree86
with "apt-get install xserver-xfree86". When I run "startx" I get the
following error:

"(EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/input/mice
         No such device.
(EE) Configured Mouse: cannot open input device
(EE) PreInit failed for input device "Configured Mouse"
No core pointer

Fatal server error:
failed to initialize core devices"

The file /dev/input/mice does exist.

So what might be causing this issue?

All of the sites that I googled about this issue say that the general
cause of this message is that the config file is pointing to /dev/mouse
which has been moved to /dev/input/mice. As you can see I have it
directly pointing it to /dev/input/mice, so I am having issues narrowing
it down on google.

Here is a full log of what I get when I run "startx". Any suggestions?
