While this may be true, putting up some of your own money demonstrates a 
commitment to achieving success (and indeed becomes a motivator).  While the 
opposite (a lack of commitment) does not logically follow from not putting up 
your own money, it may still be interpreted as such by potential funders--why 
should they risk their money if you're not willing to risk your own first.
