[PLUG-announce] June Meeting: Using OpenWRT to make your router take flight (Mike Lovell)

Ever looked at your router and thought that you could do so much more 
with it? Or tried configuring it and thought that it would be easier to 
use a command line than the terrible user interface the manufacturer 
graced it with? Many home routers have more memory and processing power 
than the Space Shuttle Flight Computer. Surely they can do more.OpenWRT 
is a Linux Distribution that allows you to get more value out of a home 
router and other devices. This presentation will go over some of the 
basics of OpenWRT such as installation, customization, and 
administration. In addition, a few cool ideas for how to get more out of 
your router or other device will be talked about. After all, a computer 
with a 680Mhz Processor with 8MB of flash, 64MB of ram, and multiple 
interfaces is a terrible thing to waste.

Mike Lovell has been interested and involved in technology since a young 
age. Currently masquerading as a Software Engineer, he has spent most of 
his career as a Systems Administrator. He is also a hardware tinkerer, 
has built every desktop he’s bought, has at least partially taken apart 
every computer he’s owned, and helped design the hardware for a cluster 
of a couple thousand servers. Currently, he spends much of his time neck 
deep in various forms of virtualization technologies and the systems to 
manage them. When it comes to programming, Python is his go to language 
and Vim his default editor with some occasional gedit thrown in. He is 
also a fan of airplanes, rocketry, and some casual gaming.

We will be meeting at the C7 facility at Canopy Building 5 in Lindon, 
behind Home Depot. You will need to bring a photo ID in order to sign in 
at the front desk.
